Getting Creative with Photography

Growing up, my family never had much money. We moved from apartment to apartment, before settling in a small condo in Sammamish, WA. Over the years our living space has grown increasingly cluttered with childhood memories and possessions. Friends and pets have come and gone. I never felt satisfied with where my family lived. If I wanted to have a sleepover or compose a photo, I would do so elsewhere. Yet as I’ve grown older, I’ve gained an appreciation for the places I’ve called home. Part of me has always wanted to use my creativity to capture magical photos in this ordinary place.

The Birds

Birdcage in Washington

While I was on my mission, my family got a new set of birds. A few years earlier, we had another couple of parakeets, until one murdered the other. If I was to get a great photo in an ordinary place, they would be my subject.

This is Tim. He’s one of our non-murderous parakeets. Tim has the most eccentric personality out of all the pets we’ve had. Tim’s hobbies include knocking bells over ledges, staring at himself in the mirror, and protecting his disabled cage-mate Luna. In this photo, I am holding him in front of our living room window which overlooks one of Washington’s many forests. This felt like a great way to capture the beauty of home.

Flying Back Home

Seattle Airport

My dad has been working for Delta airlines since before I was born, so I’ve spent a good portion of my life navigating airports. On my way out of Seattle, I saw this view of the tarmac. I remember hearing stories from my dad about how ugly and stupid this airport was, and granted many of his tales were grounded in truth. Yet, I wonder how many people pass this spot every day without looking out the window.

As I stood there watching, I saw this man preparing to load this airplane with its meal services. He knocked on the door for the crew to let him in. As he did this, another plane landed on the runway behind him. Another great photo in an ordinary place.
